Fritz (they/she) is a middle-aged goblin, an accomplished inventor, and a 20th-level Chronurgy Wizard. They hail from Ravnica, and are among the highest-ranked members of the Izzet League (Ravnica’s guild of steampunk/aetherpunk engineers, chemists, electricians, and scientists). Fritz specializes in time magic, and has invented multiple magical devices to help them manipulate time.
Gun – “Chronostutter”
Fritz wields a revolver-like magical gun of their own invention. This gun is their spellcasting focus, and requires two types of ammunition: “filters” and “crystals.”
“Filters” are tiny coin-sized discs of translucent film onto which arcane symbols are inscribed, and these filters are held between washer-like metal rings. Each filter contains the “shape” of a particular spell that Fritz knows, such that when mana is channeled through the filter, the spell’s effects emerge from the other side. Filters can be slotted either into the front of any of the chambers of the gun’s rotating cylinder, or into the goggles or glove (described later on). When not in use, filters are stacked neatly into a “clip” (similar to a sleeve of crackers) and stored in the gun’s handle. Mechanically, this “clip” is Fritz’s spellbook, and the “filters” that they load directly into their gear represent the spells that they have prepared for the day. All of this also meshes well with the mechanics of expanding, duplicating, or replacing a spellbook.
“Crystals” represet Fritz’s spell slots. They are small, round gemstones that can be charged with mana like batteries (see backpack, below). They come in nine sizes, with the largest being the most powerful and the smallest being the least powerful, but all nine fit neatly into the back of the gun’s chambers. Crystals are stored in bullet casings, which Fritz keeps on a bandolier slung across their chest.
Goggles – “Timesifter”
Fritz wears a pair of massive, bulky, impossibly elaborate magic-tech goggles, also of their own invention. Through these goggles, Fritz can see glimpses of the past, the short-term future (1-2 seconds), and alternate timelines. Fritz is constantly seeing ghostly images of possible futures, which she can shoot with Timesplitter to ensure that a given predicted outcome does not come to pass (Spell Mastery – Silvery Barbs; Signature Spell – Counterspell). “Filters” and “crystals” can both be slotted into the chambers of a revolver-cylinder-like rotating contraption attached to the left eye lens, which allows filters to be rotated into place in front of the left eye, and activated with the press of a button. These are used for spells such as True Sight and Divination.
Left Glove/Gauntlet – “Clocknapper”
Fritz wears a large magic-tech gauntlet that they use to directly manipulate certain magical effects, such as a Mage Hand or Bigby’s Hand spell. It is pre-loaded with “filters” at the beginning of the day (when Fritz prepares their spells), which can be selected via the various buttons and switches on the wrist console, and powered with “crystals” slotted into said console.
Backpack – “Pacemaker” (not pictured in the art)
On their back, Fritz wears a bulky apparatus that functions as a portable power generator, whose shape resembles an hourglass. It sports an array of gauges and meters, and hums with power (both magical and electrical). It is a portable power source for all of Fritz’s gadgets, including the “crystals” which power their spells. “Crystals” are loaded into it when Fritz goes to sleep, and are thereby “recharged” overnight, and retrieved in the morng (this represents refreshing spell slots with a long rest). It can also be overclocked to rapidly recharge smaller crystals on-demand, but this process still takes a full hour and cannot safely be done more than once per day (Arcane Recovery).
In the last session of this game Fritz & Co. defeated Acererak in his Fortress of Conclusion, a major victory in the impending war against The Whispered One (who I dare not name in writing until the campaign is well and truly over; my DM might see this). Fritz is currently trying to find a way to travel back in time and interfere in the battle between Ugin and Nicol Bolas thousands of years ago on Tarkir, such that Ugin wins instead, thereby preventing the War of the Spark which ravaged Fritz’s home plane. The best lead they have right now is the Interplexing Beacons, which is what drew them to the party, but once they arrived they decided to stay and fight because with countless lives hanging in the balance in the war against the Whispered One, Fritz simply couldn’t justify non-interference.
