Do Americans really have one bin that’s just for EVERYTHING that can possibly be recycled? /u/Right-Inspection-523 No such thing as stupid questions

I live in Norway, and here (at least in Oslo) we use separate bags for plastics, paper, food waste, glass & metal, and then everything else. People in comment sections are always mentioning that they toss something in the “recycling” bin. Am I misunderstanding something, or is there genuinely a single bin that’s just generally for recyclable materials?
