First time playing: gonna DM. Any advice? /u/Severe-Commission303 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hello! Just got the ‘Stormwreck Isle’ starter pack for Xmas, and have never played DnD in my life. I’m super excited to play, and I’ve got the time and interest to read the rule book and adventure book, as well as a big love of storytelling, so being the DM makes sense.

What should I know as a first time DM? The rule book is descriptive, but also kind of a lot. Should I constantly flip through it to remember how much cover gives how much protection and what specifically gives advantage or not? Am I supposed to remember everything? Is there anything that the rulebook isn’t clear on or that is a common mistake?

Any advice is super appreciated!
