Changing from mechanical engineering to computer science major. Looking for opinions from those with experience and direct knowledge, please /u/Stock_Television1670 CSCQ protests reddit

My child was previously majoring in mechanical engineering (just one semester) but is changing to computer science this next semester. Their partner graduated with this degree last spring, but has not found work yet.

Basically, I am looking for advice and personal experience from anyone with these degrees, or with hiring responsibilities in this field, or who looks at salaries and hiring trends in a professional capacity.

My concern is that I have heard many people recommend against a computer science degree. I have seen it said that it is oversaturated and more and more difficult to find work in that field. I’ve also read people saying that the role could largely be replaced by AI.

I would appreciate any input anyone has, and thank you for reading! I will be passing any advice or stories along to my kiddo for consideration. I will likely try to post this in other groups as well.
