I’m not a programmer, but I use programming languages at my job (VBA, SQL, Python, SAS, and R) and am pretty good at it relative to the average actuary that might only know a little bit of VBA and SQL.
I never took ChatGPT seriously until I decided to use it for a large programming project. This was also a couple weeks after my company approved using copilot for work-related inquiries, so this was the first time I used genAI for serious work.
In short, I’m pretty impressed. I would say GenAI isn’t very good for generating the whole architecture of your software, but it’s extremely good at fixing syntax issues and correcting small blocks of code. It made my project 100X easier. I was going to delegate this project to my direct reports, but I found it easier to just write up some code on the spot and have copilot make the syntax fixes.
I know people think tech companies are using AI as an excuse to layoff people, but maybe there’s a hint of truth to that. It definitely amplifies a programmer’s productivity.
