I feel like if your academic journey mostly involves learning the curriculum then most schools are evenly matched in this.

What exactly separates CMU, Stanford, Berkeley, MIT and other similar schools from mid tier CS schools? Is it mostly if you want a stronger student body and better research opportunities?
