Recently I read a story here on Reddit about a vegan bride who wanted to show her family how satisfying vegan food could be. She hired a renowned, very expensive vegan chef to cater her wedding, but partway through the reception, one of her brothers brought in 15 pizzas and loudly announced, “Who’d like some REAL food?”
Another time I read about a vegan who wanted to have a birthday party at which the food would be vegan, and her parents told her she was choosing her veganism over her family, and that none of them would be able to come unless she served meat at the event.
Stories like this have gotten me pondering what that worldview could possibly be like. I was vegetarian for many years and still prefer to eat that way most meals. Vegetarians and vegans choose that for all kinds of good reasons, like their morals and their health. Yet we have pretty much all experimented for long periods with meat eating in the past.
From where does the mindset come, among meat eaters, that there is no way to go even a single meal, just a few hours of the day, without consumption of meat? Are there folks here who literally feel they must consume meat every meal, every day, day in, day out, without exception or compromise, like the folks in these accounts that I read? And if so, what is your thought process? As a person who has gone years without eating meat, I would just love to get a better insight and understanding into the worldview that believes they cannot forego it for even a few hours under any circumstances.
This is intended as a sincere and respectful inquiry, trying to get insight into a way of thinking that doesn’t come naturally to me. Thanks in advance for any thoughtful replies.
