Ideas for filling a story hole now that a player has left? /u/CommunicationLow2121 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

We are just starting a new campaign and after 2 sessions, one of the players had to leave (personal reasons). He was playing a warforged who came from Mechanus for reasons unknown to the rest of the party.

Another player’s backstory involves her working with a crime boss from another city. She needed to pay off a family debt. The crime boss agreed to pay off the debt. In exchange, she was to befriend and learn everything she could about this warforged individual who had just appeared in their sister city (the asks and demands would have grown as the campaign went on, until we had some solid and interesting inter-party conflicts.)

Now that the warforged character has left, how do you think the crime boss would react? It was never about repaying the loan amount, to him it would have been small change even though to her it would have been an astronomical fee. The crime boss does have a way to track her down / scry on her thanks to a magical brand she received when she entered the deal with him. Any thoughts on what his next ask might be in light of the situation? Hoping to help her keep the fact that she’s working for him well hidden until the party has had a chance to bond and start to trust each other.
