I feel like I’m a terrible DM, and can’t get over it. /u/Gojira_Saurus_V DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hey everyone, rant incoming so feel free to leave since it’s gonna be long.

so, context.

I’m someone who was grabbed in neck by dnd when I heard about it, and immediately wanted to jump in. I got gifted the Stranger Things set not very long after, and immediately started to look for things to do.

Though I fell off a bit, eventually I formed a party with some hobby-friends and classmates, and we started with LMoP. after realizing none of us actually had read through the rules deeply since they only knew dnd because of me (I did, but even then, you forget stuff) we decided to play the Stranger Things campaign, closing LMoP for later. We chose some premades from beyond, but that didn’t work out either. That just happened, but yesterday on my family’s Christmas party, I got gifted DoSI, and the DM screen kit (dungeon kit). After reading through those rules (practically the same, I know) and the campaign itself, I’d almost be tempted to change again, but force them to pick one of the premades, since making characters alone or taking premades from beyond did’t work (those from beyond included reffrences to the PH and DMG, which nobody in the party owns)

One of the players also really fell in love with dnd when i introduced him to it, and always says he wants to take the game seriously, and i also want to do that, but half the fun is the nonsense.

Should I, for a more beginner-friendly campaign force them to choose a premade included in the kit and read through those rules, or should we continue Hunt for the Thessalhydra but in bits and pieces, with nobody actually knowing what they’re doing?
