Does dnd feel like a dps race to anyone else? /u/some_random_nonsense DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Ive been getting back into DMing after years of not paying, and i made the mistake of letting my party be a fighter, monk, barb, and dps bard. Now the whole team just focuses on winning their 1v1s. before that i was a player with the same table and we had a warlock, barb, bard, and something else if forgot, but it was a very high level, 15 at the end so all of my bard spells just got resisted.

In both games it felt the the encounter played out almost proscribed with people just running to the nearest goon and swinging on them.

From my own position as a DM it just feels so boring because if i ever make mildly hard encounter the players will get bodied. The numbers just dont add up fast enough.

What are i and my players missing? what utility items and spells exist that were just not using? (besides all of them) are their powerful buffs my players are just ignoring? i hear a lot about bards, clerics, and wizards having powerful cc and utility.

for reference im asking this at levels 1, 5, 10, and 15. we usually play in the 5-10 range tho.

my goal is to gently, or roughly if i have to, encourage my players to diversify their classes and actions a bit. am i wrong in doing so? is dnd just a dps race?
