It was early 2006, RuneScape was at it’s peak and so were the vast amount of Unofficial Forums based around the game, but there was one Forum that was one of the largest at the time. What was MyRune? MyRune was an unofficial RuneScape Forum Community offering a fun way to meet new players. It incentivized “Free” RuneScape guides and giveaways, flash games, a black market, Live Chat, rewards system, ranks and more. We’ll get into the more in just a bit. MyRune.com Banner on June 12, 2006 MyRune became so popular, the user base grew to over 2,000 users and over 30,000 posts by June 15, 2006. The forums were littered with giveaway posts, photos shared by players and most importantly an “Admin” that was active nearly every single moment of the day. Who was Admin? Admin, who went by the private name of “Josh”, ran the community. They didn’t just run this one community, but several more. The domain name “Zezima.com” was registered at or around the same time “MyRune.com” was registered. Admin claimed connections to Peter Zezima himself, even having a forum account himself on MyRune and being active on it. Was this the real Zezima? No. Zezima.com replaced MyRune after its fall in early 2008. MyRune.com Homepage on February 16, 2007. MyRune Giveaways In 2007, the internet was still evolving and 12-16 year old’s didn’t know any better but to join these forums and see if they can have a chance at the incentives MyRune offered. 1M Gold on RuneScape at the time was huge, it was so huge that if you were to purchase it, you’d be looking at around $6.00 USD per Million GP. MyRune.com Gold Price Banner on February 24, 2007 MyRune had giveaways, but there was a specific way to be eligible for giveaways, obtain a rank and become “trusted” within the community. This required the following:
Let’s start with verification. Verification In order to be trusted by Admin, you’d first need to verify yourself and submit an application. The application was reviewed and approved/denied given you provided enough personal information, and were committed to risking your own personal safety for a chance at getting a badge on the forums and joining the giveaways. The forum was designed in a way such that having rank means you’re superior than the rest, and many people looked up to you. This gave users the feeling of being powerful, so everyone wanted in on it. Verification required that you:
Live Chat & Girls The Live Chat feature was one of the most widely used features on MyRune, it was even more popular than the forums itself. It gained traction through marketing the ability to meet new people, friends, and…girls? MyRune.com Banner on August 28, 2006 Admin themselves were always active on the forums, but they weren’t alone. Overtime, they slowly introduced a new person, XxXGirlieGirlXxX. Who was she? Well, she was the owners “Wife”, or “Girlfriend” at the time. They eventually went to get married and made it a public thing across the Forums and Live Chat. But was this person actually real or was it just Admin playing her role? This is just the beginning and I will post a Part 2 if this post catches any traction. I’ve reached out to Colonello to cover this story, but still haven’t received a response from him. Part 2 will contain some eye-opening details, including grooming, real life credit card information thefts, civil lawsuits and cease and desist orders, threats, legal matters and more from “Admin” on MyRune.
