Hi everyone,
I’m sure most people saw the thread last month about this project, but we thought it was worth trying again since many people may have gone home for the holiday season.
Runescape has seen many updates since 2001, with each version having unique content and features. But Jagex didn’t start keeping full weekly backups until 2012 – apart from the final version of RS Classic and the OSRS backup, everything else is lost.
However, if you ever tried the game on a computer even just for a few seconds, the files would be downloaded and stored in a hidden location. So if you have any old computers, laptops or hard drives you played RS on, they could have a lost version.
We have made a custom search tool that will quickly scan a drive for old RS versions. However if you want to search yourself, the common directories would be “C:WINDOWS.file_store_32” or “C:WINDOWS.jagex_cache_32”. You can submit anything you found to this form.
We’re also now offering a prize of $500 each to anyone who can find a missing version from 2001-2004. ($250 if the files are incomplete). Hopefully this will be an additional incentive!
Thanks once again, and feel free to check out our Discord server and website which answer common questions, and this spreadsheet showing which versions are still missing.
