Hello all, I am currently a senior (100% online) Computer Information Systems major and I am admittedly burnt out with my degree. I was more interested in cybersecurity and networking concepts but my curriculum has pretty much entirely focused on programming and business, both of which I am minimally interested in if at all. My school offered no alternative major, so I just stuck with it. Ideally, I plan on working help desk and eventually becoming a system admin. I have about 7 classes until I can graduate, I failed 1 class last semester and withdrew from another as I was pursuing training for my new cellphone sales job at the time, struggling between juggling my coursework and the job + training. Prior to getting that job, I worked as a part-time butcher. I really just wanted any different job, but suffice it to say, that cellphone sales job was bullshit commission only garbage. I digress, but anyway, all throughout this year I have been applying to help desk jobs and couldn’t get anything despite being a senior CIS major. Being that I’m burnt out with my classes and want to commit to a help desk job, I noticed that a lot of them just require an associates. My advisor told me I can take a break from my classes and receive an (A.S) in Interdisciplinary Studies – Science & Technology. I’d still be able to pursue my (B.S) in CIS at any point, but my rationale is that having a concrete degree now, even if just an Associates, will make it much easier to land a help desk role. Of the hundreds of jobs I applied to, the only one that interviewed me seemed to have reservations about me doing classes and also juggling the job and as such, I was not hired. So I ask all of you this, is it more worthwhile to work some bullshit job while pursuing my classes or should I get the Associates now with the intent of completing the B.S at some point and trying to apply to more help desk gigs? Will having the Associates over an incomplete B.S CIS degree make me that much more valuable of a candidate for an entry level help desk job?
