Two months ago I received and signed an offer for an undergrad data science internship from an old and recognizable tech company in my hometown of Houston (background check also completed). Earlier this week, I got an offer for a FAANG SWE internship in NYC for the same summer term. I have no doubt this will be better for my career, even better as I will already be in NYC for a spring internship.
The FAANG offer does not allow me to defer terms. How should I approach contacting my recruiter from my previous offer? Ideally, I would like to defer my Houston offer for the fall as the opportunity is still really good, so I will talk about this with my recruiter (even though my signed offer letter already has a written start and end date and as far as I’m aware this company does not offer fall internships). In the case I can’t defer however, I would really like to go with the FAANG offer.
Will opening this negotiation burn bridges and hurt my reputation long-term? I also have concerns as the Houston company is heavily related with my university and some orgs I participate in.
