Wool Coat Price / Quality Ratio /u/watchtheplainclothes /r/malefashionadvice

I recently bought a very expensive (for me) piece of knitwear from Inis Meáin, but only after looking into it for a long time and determining that it would be worth the investment. I think on a lot of knitwear, e.g. cashmere, the difference between a £100 & a £500 sweater is big.

I don’t own a big wool coat, I usually wear a puffer / down jacket in the cold, but I’m looking to pick one up this winter.

The nicest one I’ve seen is probably the Black & Cream Donegal Overcoat by Permanent Style and Private White VC that I’ve seen mentioned a couple of times on this sub, but it’s £1,100 and out of stock, potentially for the year.

I also like the 1920s Brown Herringbone Tweed Balmacaan on Olderbest, which is £265.

Just wondering as a wool coat virgin what people’s thoughts are on the likely difference in quality, feel, and durability between the two (or comparable coats in those 2 v different price ranges).

I don’t mind spending a lot on a coat that should last at least 10-15 years, but by the same token, if the difference is marginal, I am happy to pay a quarter of the price!

Cheers!
