Long story, I have 2.5 years of experience as a “software engineer leader” in a startup company and that company went bankrupt this June. It is the first company I joined. It is very bad management basically our boss doesn’t know how to run a tech company and we used so many different techniques to build our AI software but nothing specific. We basically build everything like a university project. My boss told me what he wanted that was all and then I one of my co-workers (a technique I am his leader and he needs to listen to me) to build our thing. Our “team” only has me and him, and my only boss is the CTO of the company. There are some other parts done by other teams and people but I only did the things he gave me.
And like I said we basically did things like university projects and we used different wired things. There is no system design since I just deliver what the CTO wants to him. We even used different programming languages for the same product’s different parts I don’t know how it worked eventually but apparently, it failed.
To be fair I am not blaming the company they treated me well it just didn’t manage well and it is my fault didn’t improve myself or find another company. I don’t blame anything on them.
But that being said I don’t have a specific tech stack. I did write all the projects I have done in the company in the resume, but I am not an expert on anything, not system design since I almost didn’t do it, not web backend and front end, I didn’t do them. We were building “software” but I actually did it more like doing things my professor gave me in university. I did no SQL things, no embedded thing unless you call Nvidia Jetson “embedded device”.
The only thing I am good at, or probably Ok with is coding. Just coding itself… To be fair the company was very loose so I didn’t work too much time (I only worked around 4 hours a day) when I still had a job so even my coding skills are not very good. (again I am not blaming the company it is my fault).
I haven’t applied for too many jobs yet but did get 5 interviews since I have some working experience and I failed all. I feel like I cannot answer these questions well since I didn’t do them in my loose job but the interviewers expect me to act like someone who worked 2.5 years. I am even afraid of applying for many jobs since I feel like I cannot pass the interviews.
What should I prepare? What kind of jobs should I apply for? entry level or mid-level? What kind of tech stack should I apply since even I don’t know which tech stack I am good at except just coding… I know I should apply for both mid and entry-level jobs but which one should I focus more on? I know I am a bad programmer but I want to improve myself since I lost my job… I started doing leet code every day but that seems the easiest part of being a programmer…
