TL/DR: questions at the bottom but why is the IG in a weird place, should I switch, will i get hated in groups for using it. Thanks
Hello everyone just wanted to say that im very new to the game (started about 6 days ago, played for 4 or 5 of those days) and I just want some advice on what to do
I started the game with a buddy who hasnt played since we opened it becauss we couldnt really do campaign together as new players, so I agreed to grind on ahead so I could help them out when they get back (there was a third member but he wasnt totally interested yet but we all got the game during sale)
I never lookee up anything for this game before but my buddy did tell me to not use the guardian armor because it was for rushing to iceborn. So I took leather and the first weapon I tested was Heavy Bowgun, it was fine. damage was decent but I felt way to slow and when I didnt have the rapid fire, felt meh or boring (Didnt use switching ammo at the time but i learned that was important). I tried out the bow for my next big hunt (Great Jagras) and it felt better, I appreciated the mobility it has but the coatings were eh. I continued to use this until after the bird fight where i tried to fight the anaj at the same time (I know what was I thinking). I felt to stamina hungry that the build got exhausted, new at the time so not like i really knew management for it yet.
Let me just say I also am big on tier lists, not for the purpose of having the best weapon but it does tell me if I am bad with the weapon, good with a weapon or if its just op or weak, and also other people in groups judging you. (big MMO player so i know Raid groups do this sort of thing)
Well after the bow didnt feel likehome I gave the insect glaive a try and I instantly fell in love with the weapon and it was the first weapon I build another version for, the defender (I was not aware it was the same as guardian armor at the time forgive me). The mobility, kinsect, multi-hit felt amazing to use. Waste was no problem and all the fights felt much easier being in the air. Now the tier lists I looked at said IG was pretty low especially for solo but I felt the opposite, the buffs uou give yourself as weave attacks, poisioning things, it helped alot.
Sorry another side note here, i used the defender tree because of durability, I wasnt used to balacing all the sharpening in combat and it felt like it took me out of the hunt at the time.
The IG felt like it was the perfect weapon after i started a fight with a Rathian, felt I was doing good, then a Rathalos showed up and I was fighting both at the same time. I was streaming to a friend on Discord who played MHW before was certain I was dead. But the glaive kept my in the air was with well timed jumps, helicopter attacks that kept me in the air, and mounting. I lived long enough to scare the rathian away, fight the rathalos off then chase down the Rathian. I had eventually beat her up to the nest where I got stunned and was about to die as she charged me. I thought it was it until i barely got out of stunned and rolled out of the way. This caused her to break the damn wall for the waterfall, something I didnt know was there and knocked her all the way down killing her in one of the most cinematic ways to me and felt like I fought way above my weight class (Bone armor except Anaj pants and a Defender 2 IG)
Since this ive really got the IG down and used the poison version of the IG until Zag, where i switched back to defender 3. After continuing to beating the Elder Dragon I then learned thd truth of the defender weapons and instantly swithed to a hard bone 3 IG, still had some decent durability on it jus lost some dmg.
Now i helped the third friend and he loves the game, i switched off my glaive to help him and try new weapons for myself and this is where i fucked up. He uses a Charge Axe which looks so cool, but trying out the other weapons alot of them felt slow (i didnt try them all so bare with me)
DB was the only one the felt good, The switch axe was neat but I didnt understand its mechanic yet. Gun Lance felt alright but slow.
I also felt like i was getting hit way more, The IG kept me from getting hit so much and after getting some airborn damage gear it made other weapons feel slow, or to easy to get hit. DB was the best other then IG vause it was ez and the roll was good.
Now Im questioning myself, did i lock myself into a weapon that other hunters are gonna hate me for. It doesnt do as much damage as the others and is considered pretty mid if not bad it seems.
I am just wondering, I know the IG has better damage on the ground which is use once i knock things down or out of the sky then its back to smacking them around again. But is it just gonna lag behind everything else is damage? is there another weapon I should try? just want some opinions on the IG, why its rated low, if i should switch now before really getting it HR and if so what. Only tried IG, GL, DB, SA
Edit: I typed this out 3 days ago before realizing that I needed 15 comment karma to make a post so it is finally here. There is a few things I wanted to add. My friend is struggling more then me with the charge axe then I am with the IG, and now im realizing that maybe flying around the air is cheap and is also making the game easier for me then intended. Is this a common thing? Also I am sorry if information changed or i mistyped something I did this 3-4 days ago and didnt check it sense
Questions: Is the IG gonna lag in damage compared to other weapons? Is there other weapons I should try? I see the IG is sometimes rated as a low weapon and was wondering why? is the weapon cheap against monsters because of flying? am i missing out on certain experiences?
