TL;DR: applied to small local tech companies for software engineer & web developer, but no response. Planning to transition from web dev to cybersecurity, is this a good idea? If so, how do i get started & what do i do in winter break to get into good position? What certification should i go for? Google cybersecurity or compria security+ ?
Whole story:
Got CS bachelor’s in dec 2023. 1 month of unpaid internship experience as augmented reality web developer from nameless startup (i got scammed here). Worked on multiple full stack & game dev projects with database management systems with sql.
Thats pretty much what my experience is. I wanted to become a game developer when i started, but i realized the competition and lack of qualifications since my university dont offer that many game dev courses, and me learning online isnt helping without experience. So i switched to web dev in 2022, this is where the job market is changing dramatically.
I got an full-time offer where my boss straight up planning to steal my work with no recognition, paperwork, hire me without mentioning about unpaid section, or future consideration and fire me as soon as i finish the work. I tried to bargain like give low paid full-time, but he said this is the best he can offer, take it or leave.
Im currently working as a substitute teacher to survive, since other places wont take cs degree for some reason. I applied at the local tech small conpanies, no respond.
I have decided to get masters degree in cs from a top university with focus of machine learning & cybersecurity, just finished the first semester with gpa of 3.9 (final grade isnt availabe yet).
My winter break is about to start, so what can i do to sharpen my skills? Do u have any suggestions? I plan to get a certificate in cybersecurity from google or the comptia security+.
