Hey,
Junior dev here wanting some advice with a shitty contract I’ve been on for a while now. This company I’ve been working for has had their fair share of red flags, which has made me reconsider whether I want to be hired at the end of my contract period.
Recently though, the manager has been demanding that I work overtime to complete a project. While I have gladly worked OT earlier in the contract, his behavior towards his employees, and a result of his design decisions and mismanagement, I no longer feel that I should be making these sacrifices.
This situation would be different if the projects I’m working on could be put on my resume, or showcased to future employers in any way, but these are all internal tools that will never be seen by anyone else except for employees.
After a rough meeting this morning, I finally mentioned that I did not work over the weekend when asked for a progress update. My manager started getting pretty heated when I mentioned that I was an hourly employee attached to a consulting company, and that I’m contractually obligated to work M-F 8-5, especially since I’m only being paid for that time anyway.
I’d rather not have discussed this during our meeting with our team this morning, but his eagerness to start grilling me about not working for free made me feel like I had no other option.
We ended the meeting by him asking me if I thought things would be any different when I was hired on at the end of my contract, to which I responded that I would not accept a contract from him if one was offered.
This manager has a history of treating his employees like garbage and unjustly firing dev’s who don’t toe the line whenever he blows the whistle.
Has anyone ever been in rough situations like this? I’m not really worried about employment, I’ve been discussing multiple options with other companies for a bit now, and would much rather make this exit as clean as possible.
Since this is a contract position, would leaving early hurt me in any way? The end of my contract is coming up very soon (within the next week or so).
